Secrets of the Superhuman Food Pyramid: Negative Effects of Red Wine

Red wine is an alcoholic beverage made from fermented black and Teinturier grape varieties. The actual color of red wine varies depending on age, with young wines typically having a deep violet hue, intense red for mature ones, and brown for much older wines. Anthocyanins, a type of pigment in plants, are responsible for the rich hue of red wine. Anthocyanins, along with a variety of anti-oxidants, are credited as responsible for the numerous health benefits of this beverage. But red wine has a darker side, which is why it is best avoided especially by individuals with particular medical conditions.

Red Wine Risks:

Red wine’s alcohol content ranges from 8% to up to 18%. We’ve long heard that alcohol consumption is not entirely dangerous when done in moderation. However, what constitutes moderation is to this day still a subject of debate as even alcohol experts acknowledge there’s no standard drink definition. Even moderate consumption can already disrupt sleeping patterns, and can pose serious dangers when taken alongside medications like acetaminophen, anticonvulsants and anti-depressants.

Meanwhile, a July 2014 published report links regular consumption, even in small amounts, to increased risk for coronary heart disease and stroke. This prompted the UK government to release its latest recommendation of at least two alcohol-free days for men and three for women. Alcohol’s most known side effects are, of course, liver inflammation and scarring, but consumption is also strongly associated with the risk of developing breast cancer, gastrointestinal diseases, oral cancer and colorectal cancer.

Alcohol may hinder weight loss or weight maintenance efforts as well not only because it is an effective appetizer. It is crucial to remember that the liver is the main organ that breaks down alcohol as well as fat. Alcohol takes precedence over fat. This means that it’s always going to be alcohol that the liver breaks down first. Taking copious amounts of alcohol alongside a calorie-heavy meal will result in the fat getting unprocessed and instead stored as additional body mass.

The process by which red wine is made also allows for lectins to possibly remain in the drink. Lectins are a type of protein found in all foods like nightshade vegetables, soy beansand dairy. Grape seeds, which are often included during the crushing process, havesignificant lectin content in them. The problem with lectin is that these proteins are difficult to break down as they can withstand digestive enzymes and stomach acid. These proteins can attach to and seep out from the stomach lining as well, and can settle in various organs like the kidneys, thyroid, and even the brain.

Lectins are continually being studied as a potential health culprit. Evidence is sparse on the lectin-reducing efficacy of fermentation, and so red wine may potentially contain these proteins. Consumption can induce anaphylactic shock, and continued exposure is strongly linked to the development of a variety of autoimmune diseases. Individuals with existing allergies, leaky gut and irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) are particularly prone to the ill effects of lectins.
